SOCIAL JUSTICE MEDIA INTERNSHIP Temporary Part-time Position Ms. Foundation for Women The Ms. Foundation for Women, a national social justice organization, with offices in downtown Brooklyn, New York, is seeking to recruit a Media Intern. About the Organization Founded in 1973, the Ms. Foundation for Women is the first and leading women’s fund and the foundation engaged across the United States to build women’s collective power to ignite change. The Ms. Foundation delivers strategic grants, capacity building and leadership development to organizations at local, state, Tribal and national levels working for policy change and culture change across the broad areas of women’s health, economic justice, ending violence and building democracy. With its long history of bringing the leadership and perspectives of women who are most marginalized to the center, and building the capacity of diverse women and their organizations to connect across issues, geography and with other social justice groups, the Foundation strengthens social movements and brings our nation closer to its democratic ideals. Position Summary: We are looking for motivated, creative, hard-working, self-starters from diverse backgrounds committed to social justice, public service, and women’s issues for part time Summer and/or Fall internship. The Media Intern will research, write and assist in the production of media related products such as grantee videos, audio presentations and written documents. The central theme of this material will be women’s issues, with a particular focus on social justice initiatives being raised through the Ms. Foundations work. The overall goal of this position is to provide communications and new media related assistance to the Communications department of the Ms. Foundation for Women. Responsibilities: • Provide research and writing support on issues involving our current grantees. • Intern will log, edit, and transcribe digital media submitted by grantees. • Become an integral part of our Communications team. • Work collaboratively with our Public Policy intern to scan the current social justice landscape to develop impact plans and statements and other data for use throughout the organization. • Research related media pertaining to gender in mainstream media and economic landscape. • Create written reports, digital archives or digests on an ongoing basis based on the video products produced. • Any other administrative/clerical duties that may be required on an as needed basis. Qualifications: The ideal candidate would be a student at a college or university in a graduate or undergraduate program. Although applicants from all disciplines are welcome, the following academic majors would be most relevant: Media and Urban Environment, Social Media Studies, and Master of Media Studies. Prior social media, digital/video production and office experience is a plus. • Interest and commitment of the work of the Ms. Foundation and social justice. • Demonstrated ability in the Social Media and Public Policy arena. • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment. • Strong organization and communication skills. • Proficiency in research, writing and video production. • A high energy level with a passionate commitment to women’s empowerment and the mission of the Foundation, outstanding interpersonal skills, sound judgment and a sense of humor. • Proven ability to “play well with others” and foster strong, supportive relationships and teams with donors, institutional partners, peers and colleagues. • A sense of humor, strong interpersonal skills and flexible working style. • Proficient with Windows-based word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email and the Internet. Compensation: This is a temporary part-time internship position for approximately 20 hours a week for the summer or possibly longer depending on the candidate. Salary rate for this position is competitive and this position is not available for fringe benefits.
