About the Vera List Center for Art and Politics
The Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School is dedicated to serving as catalyst for the discourse on the role of the arts in society and their relationship to the socio-political climate in which they are created. It seeks to achieve this through the organization of public programs that respond to the pressing social and political issues of our time as they are being articulated by the academic community and visual and performing artists. The center strives to enhance the university’s educational mission by bringing together scholars and students, the people of New York, and national and international audiences in an exploration of new possibilities for civic engagement.
Each academic year, the center dedicates its programs to one overarching theme, allowing for a continuous, in-depth, and interdisciplinary investigation. In 2004-2005, the first annual theme was dedicated to different notions of “Homeland,” followed by “Considering Forgiveness” in 2005-2006 and “The Public Domain” in 2006-2007. For the 2007-2008 academic year, many of the center’s programs will investigate the philosophical concept of “Agency.”
Established in 1992 by a generous grant from the late Vera List, a life trustee of the university, the Vera List Center embodies the legacy of The New School’s historic involvement with the avant-garde in the arts. For a current listing of programs, visit www.vlc.newschool.edu.
