Grants for Study/Research in Germany
The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst/German Academic Exchange Service) has announced its annual competition for grants for study and research in Germany.
DAAD Study Scholarships are available to undergraduate seniors and graduate students who wish to pursue course work at German universities. These grants are intended to cover ten months of study (October 1, 2010 to July 31, 2011), and provide stipends of approximately i750 ($1,091) per month. The DAAD will also provide health insurance and an allowance for travel costs. Students who enter German degree programs may be eligible for an extension of the grant for up to one academic year.
DAAD Research Grants are available either on a short-term (1 to 6 months) or long-term (7 to 10 months) basis. Short-term grants must be used between June 1, 2010 and January 31, 2011. Long-term grants may be used at any time during the German academic year (October 1, 2010 to July 31, 2011). The competition for this award is open to graduate students, Ph.D. candidates, and post-doctoral researchers. Stipends provide approximately i1000 ($1,455) per month and as with the Study Scholarship, the DAAD will offer health insurance and at least partial coverage for travel costs.
US or Canadian citizens are eligible for grants. Citizens of other countries may be eligible if they have been enrolled in a degree program at The New School for at least two years and express an intent to return to The New School upon the completion of their grant term. In all cases international students must contact the New York office of the DAAD (212-758-3223) to determine whether they qualify.
Applications will be judged on the basis of academic achievement, the merit of the study plan or research project, and the need for a period of study or research at a German institution of higher learning. While Scholarship and Grant recipients are expected to have some knowledge of the German language at the time they take up their award, a high level of proficiency in German is not required in order to apply.
Applications for study or research grants must be completed online. The online application and instructions for completing it may be found on the DAAD web site. Questions on the competition may be directed to Henry Watkin, Coordinator of International Exchanges, The New School for Social Research, 72 Fifth Avenue, Room 317, New York, NY 10011, 212-229-5700 ext. 3011.
Applications must be submitted to Henry Watkin at the address mentioned above no later than October 30, 2009. A University faculty committee will decide which applications will be sent on to the DAAD for consideration. The final decision regarding scholarship and grant awards rests entirely with the DAAD’s selection committee. Results of the competition will be announced toward the end of March 2010.
